Buying a home is a good investment!

Despite this, demand for homes reminds high. This is because people feel more secure in their financial situation due to a stronger economy and job market. While homes may be more expensive, potential home buyers are making more money as well. Take Fannie Mae’s most recent Home Purchase Sentiment Index as an example. The survey found a rising number of respondents who said it was a good time to buy a home, despite increasing numbers who also say they believe mortgage rates and prices will continue to rise.

Doug Duncan, Fannie Mae’s senior vice president and chief economist, says the economy explains it. “Downside risk to housing is limited by broader economic strength, which helped boost perceptions of current home buying conditions,” Duncan said. “For consumers who say now is a good time to buy, the share citing overall economic conditions as a reason rose to a survey high.”

Positive trends for first-time home buyers

first time homebuyers

First-time buyers have had limited opportunities to purchase affordable housing over the past few years, but the inventory of resale properties has slowly been rising in recent months on a year-over-year basis, reports the National Association of Realtors® (NAR). Continued growth in the job market along with rising salaries will also help first-time buyers qualify for affordable home mortgages.

“Rising interest rates coupled with increasing home prices are keeping first-time buyers out of the market, but consistent job gains could allow more Americans to enter the market with a steady and measurable rise in inventory,” says NAR’s chief economist.

The median age of first-time buyers was 32 years old for the third straight year. Not surprisingly, the majority of these buyers were married couples (54 percent), followed by single females (18 percent). The median income was $75,000 and the median purchase price of the home was $203,700.

5 Coolest And Quirkiest Houses In Portland, OR.

Portland Oregon has long been a city of quirky dive bars, unconventional personalities, and for just being flat out “weird.”

Many of the people have adopted this city’s cultural norm, as they pride themselves in being open minded and non-judgmental.

Some of those people have even decided to showcase the best of the cities weird personality by sprucing up their homes to match the character of the surrounding environment.

Being born and raised in Portland, OR by an unconventional family spending years going through back roads and side alleys, east side and west sides whether personally or professionally, these are some of the coolest homes I have ever come across.

There was no poll taken for this piece, this is simply one person’s opinion after years of home scouting and searching. Here are MY top five coolest and quirkiest houses that Portland has to offer.

  • LAURELHURST – THE PINK HOUSE

This house is one of my favorite houses of all time. Tucked away in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods you will ever see.

The Pink House has old Scottish architecture combined with 70’s flavor. I never thought you could make a pink house look tactful, but my hat’s off to these owners as they have done a fabulous job.

  • LAURELHURST – THE MODERN HOUSE

This house seems to stick out like a sore thumb from it’s surrounding neighborhood. Such as incredibly modern design with such personality.

If you look closely, you can see the “cow family” on the balcony rails that provide this house with that much more personality.

  • LAURELHURST – THE CASTLE HOUSE

This house exemplifies the creative talents Portland has to offer. Modern yet industrial, the castle house is the perfect example of one family’s willingness to say “why not.”

  • SELLWOOD – THE EARTH HOUSE

This house is one of the more artsy and earthy houses that I have seen in the Portland Metro. With such grassroots designs, this house is the epitome of Portland’s organic culture.

  • SW PORTLAND – THE YELLOW HOUSE

Possibly the most iconic, and most well-known house in Portland for being “quirky.”

While there are many homes that were not mentioned on this posting that could have made the list, these were simply some of my favorites that I have seen over my long-time career as a real estate agent in the Portland market.

To say that these houses are “cool and quirky” could not be more of a compliment to the design and features of the home, as they perfectly exemplify the unconventional mindset that Portland has become so notorious for.

We all that one person in the friend group that is a little weird, and I think we can all agree that we find that one house in the neighborhood that is a little weird to be pretty cool.

We like to do things differently here in Portland, and that is exactly what these houses represent, a willingness to bring your original idea to life, to pursue your goals, and to not worry about what others will think of your decisions.

I hope you find this blog fun and entertaining and remember that “It’s A GOOD LIFE!”

12 Home improvement goals to make this year

Image result for goals in the new year

12 Home improvement goals to make this year

Try to tackle one task each month to keep your home in great shape.

January: Change your HVAC filter.
Try to change your filter every 4-6 weeks to help your HVAC system run efficiently.

February: Wash the inside of your windows.
Use glass cleaner or distilled white vinegar on the glass. Dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and dish soap to clean windowsills.

March: Change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
Do this at least once each year and test smoke detectors monthly.

April: Inspect your indoor plumbing.
Check for dripping faucets, leaks under sinks and water spots on the ceiling. Hire a plumber if you find any issues.

May: Paint a room.
Use canvas drop cloths to protect your floors and inexpensive paper or plastic ones to cover furniture.

June: Examine your home’s exterior.
Look for cracks in the driveway, holes in the siding, and tree branches or roots that are too close to your home. Call a professional for anything that needs attention.

July: Wash the outside of your house.
Power washers can damage your siding, so use a siding cleaning kit attached to a regular garden hose instead.

August: Treat for pests.
Hire an exterminator to treat for termites, spiders and other pests. Consider setting up a monthly or quarterly contract.

September: Clean the gutters.
Clear out leaves and debris. Have a professional inspect the gutters and downspouts for damage.

October: Inspect the chimney.
Hire a chimney sweep to clean and inspect your chimney, even if you don’t use the fireplace often.

November: Get organized.
Clean out kitchen cabinets and organize overflowing closets to prepare for the holidays.

December: Deep clean the floors.
Shampoo carpets and give wood floors a good cleaning. Check for exposed nails or boards that need to be repaired.

Are rising home prices beginning to level off?

Are rising home prices beginning to level off?

Economists who study real estate trends across the nation are starting to suggest that ever-escalating home prices, bidding wars and inventory shortages may begin leveling off.

“The signs are pointing to a market that’s shifting toward buyers,” reports the chief economist of Realtor  .com . “But in most places, we’re still a long way from a full reversal.”

It isn’t realistic to expect an overnight change in the current market trends. However, median home list prices were up 7 percent year-over-year this past August, according to the National Association of Realtors®, which is lower than similar year-over-year list prices in 2017 at 10 percent and in 2016 at 9 percent.

Another plus for buyers is the increasing number of homes on the market. At the end of the 2018 summer selling season, 18 of the 45 largest housing markets had an increase in listings over the previous year. This is a boon for buyers, who have been scrambling to find affordable listings and then often end up in a bidding war.

For more information on the current market status in your neighborhood please call, email, or text me.
