5 Coolest And Quirkiest Houses In Portland, OR.

Portland Oregon has long been a city of quirky dive bars, unconventional personalities, and for just being flat out “weird.”

Many of the people have adopted this city’s cultural norm, as they pride themselves in being open minded and non-judgmental.

Some of those people have even decided to showcase the best of the cities weird personality by sprucing up their homes to match the character of the surrounding environment.

Being born and raised in Portland, OR by an unconventional family spending years going through back roads and side alleys, east side and west sides whether personally or professionally, these are some of the coolest homes I have ever come across.

There was no poll taken for this piece, this is simply one person’s opinion after years of home scouting and searching. Here are MY top five coolest and quirkiest houses that Portland has to offer.

  • LAURELHURST – THE PINK HOUSE

This house is one of my favorite houses of all time. Tucked away in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods you will ever see.

The Pink House has old Scottish architecture combined with 70’s flavor. I never thought you could make a pink house look tactful, but my hat’s off to these owners as they have done a fabulous job.

  • LAURELHURST – THE MODERN HOUSE

This house seems to stick out like a sore thumb from it’s surrounding neighborhood. Such as incredibly modern design with such personality.

If you look closely, you can see the “cow family” on the balcony rails that provide this house with that much more personality.

  • LAURELHURST – THE CASTLE HOUSE

This house exemplifies the creative talents Portland has to offer. Modern yet industrial, the castle house is the perfect example of one family’s willingness to say “why not.”

  • SELLWOOD – THE EARTH HOUSE

This house is one of the more artsy and earthy houses that I have seen in the Portland Metro. With such grassroots designs, this house is the epitome of Portland’s organic culture.

  • SW PORTLAND – THE YELLOW HOUSE

Possibly the most iconic, and most well-known house in Portland for being “quirky.”

While there are many homes that were not mentioned on this posting that could have made the list, these were simply some of my favorites that I have seen over my long-time career as a real estate agent in the Portland market.

To say that these houses are “cool and quirky” could not be more of a compliment to the design and features of the home, as they perfectly exemplify the unconventional mindset that Portland has become so notorious for.

We all that one person in the friend group that is a little weird, and I think we can all agree that we find that one house in the neighborhood that is a little weird to be pretty cool.

We like to do things differently here in Portland, and that is exactly what these houses represent, a willingness to bring your original idea to life, to pursue your goals, and to not worry about what others will think of your decisions.

I hope you find this blog fun and entertaining and remember that “It’s A GOOD LIFE!”

Bedroom-Reclaimed-Wood-Wall-DIY-Lighting-DecorTips for Adding Texture to Any Décor

Whether a room is designated modern, classic, rustic, or something entirely different, texture plays an important role in interior design and décor. The right textures can make a room feel warmer, sleeker or simply more interesting. No matter what your style, consider these elements for incorporating texture into your home.

Wood: Cover a wall in reclaimed wood, bring in distressed furniture or consider a table with unfinished edges. Smooth, finished wood can add texture in a room as well. Polished wood floors and even wood ceilings are timeless design elements.

Cork: Functional and fashionable, cork is having a moment. This texture makes a great accent wall that can be tacked with art, photos and memos. Choose bar stools or side tables with cork elements or accents.

Greenery: Hang plants in baskets. Put fresh-cut flowers in vases for a kitchen table centerpiece. Grow an indoor herb garden to bring green into the kitchen. Even peacock feathers add a great pop of color and fit in with the jewel-tone trend that is in full swing.

Artwork: Art does not have to be 2-D. It can hang from the ceiling or be showcased in recessed wall niches. Pieces crafted out of metal, ceramic, wood, or textiles can all bring much needed texture to any type of room.

Metals: Metals are often overlooked when it comes to texture. Choose one main metal in a room, then add accents in other metal colors and finishes. Mixing metals is acceptable and encouraged!

Accessories: Rugs, baskets, lamp shades, and throw pillows all bring texture into a space. So does a faux fur rug on a hardwood floor. Look for chunky woven blankets or tufted pillows for the couch. Even books on a shelf add texture and warmth in a room.

7 Fixes for Freshening Up Your Home

Sometimes all it takes is a little know-how and elbow grease to brighten up an old space. Try these fixes to bring a new look and breathe new life into your home.

Wash the windows. Inside and out. Spotless glass can transform a space. Don’t forget your screens!

Shine up the trim. Dusting, washing and touching up the paint on old trim is an automatic way to make a room look cleaner, brighter and well put together.

Refresh the grout. LiveLoveDIY blogger “Virginia” suggests Polyblend Grout Renew and scrubbing between tiles with a toothbrush.

Fill in the floors. Use wax stick stain markers to hide surface- level scratches in hardwood.

Switch out the hardware. New cabinet and drawer pulls, or even sink and shower faucets can go a long way to making a bathroom or kitchen feel new.

Clean stainless steel appliances. Use a microfiber cloth with a little vinegar to wipe away fingerprints and sticky spots.

Divide up big spaces. Cozy conversation areas within an open floor plan are gaining popularity. You can also hang curtains in doorways between rooms, invest in folding doors or get creative by breaking up the room with large pieces of furniture or free-standing art.

Check out my listing on 3236 NE 78th Portland OR on my website! With a little TLC it could be the house of your dreams! Use these tips to help your dreams come true!!

Thank you Michael for the wonderful testimonial!

“I can never thank Rachel Sheller enough for steering us through the most
difficult sale imaginable.  It seemed almost every day some new demand was
added or some old demand was changed.  But Rachel stayed calm, informed and
professional throughout the entire process, even taking on some of the
buyers’ agent’s duties because, frankly, he was in over his head.  With
every new roadblock Rachel was on top of the situation, with knowledgeable
advice and firm negotiating.  In the end, we made it, even closing on time.
Rachel, you are something special.  To anyone out there looking for a first
class agent, look no further.  Rachel Sheller will do the job for you.”
-Michael Helwig, Gresham, Oregon

Gosh! Thank you so much, Michael. It was a pleasure getting to know you. I enjoyed the opportunity to be of service! I hope to be of service to you, your family and friends many times in the future!

So thankful for my amazing clients! Thank you for letting me be of service!

“Rachel really showed up for us!  It was a challenging and nerve racking adventure, but she went above and beyond.  The buyer’s agent was new, and needed handholding.  The buyers kept changing loans, and pushing all the way to the end.  Rachel remained steadfast and got the deal done and closed on time!  Whew!  She really knows her business and was there for us at every turn. No one wants a messy deal, but if you end up in one it’s great to have Rachel on your team.  She’s patient, considerate, effective and professional all the way!” -Shell Tain

I am so thankful to be of service to you and your family, Shell. It was an honor working with you!
