Be your own personal interior designer!

Bedroom-Reclaimed-Wood-Wall-DIY-Lighting-DecorTips for Adding Texture to Any Décor

Whether a room is designated modern, classic, rustic, or something entirely different, texture plays an important role in interior design and décor. The right textures can make a room feel warmer, sleeker or simply more interesting. No matter what your style, consider these elements for incorporating texture into your home.

Wood: Cover a wall in reclaimed wood, bring in distressed furniture or consider a table with unfinished edges. Smooth, finished wood can add texture in a room as well. Polished wood floors and even wood ceilings are timeless design elements.

Cork: Functional and fashionable, cork is having a moment. This texture makes a great accent wall that can be tacked with art, photos and memos. Choose bar stools or side tables with cork elements or accents.

Greenery: Hang plants in baskets. Put fresh-cut flowers in vases for a kitchen table centerpiece. Grow an indoor herb garden to bring green into the kitchen. Even peacock feathers add a great pop of color and fit in with the jewel-tone trend that is in full swing.

Artwork: Art does not have to be 2-D. It can hang from the ceiling or be showcased in recessed wall niches. Pieces crafted out of metal, ceramic, wood, or textiles can all bring much needed texture to any type of room.

Metals: Metals are often overlooked when it comes to texture. Choose one main metal in a room, then add accents in other metal colors and finishes. Mixing metals is acceptable and encouraged!

Accessories: Rugs, baskets, lamp shades, and throw pillows all bring texture into a space. So does a faux fur rug on a hardwood floor. Look for chunky woven blankets or tufted pillows for the couch. Even books on a shelf add texture and warmth in a room.

7 Fixes for Freshening Up Your Home

Sometimes all it takes is a little know-how and elbow grease to brighten up an old space. Try these fixes to bring a new look and breathe new life into your home.

Wash the windows. Inside and out. Spotless glass can transform a space. Don’t forget your screens!

Shine up the trim. Dusting, washing and touching up the paint on old trim is an automatic way to make a room look cleaner, brighter and well put together.

Refresh the grout. LiveLoveDIY blogger “Virginia” suggests Polyblend Grout Renew and scrubbing between tiles with a toothbrush.

Fill in the floors. Use wax stick stain markers to hide surface- level scratches in hardwood.

Switch out the hardware. New cabinet and drawer pulls, or even sink and shower faucets can go a long way to making a bathroom or kitchen feel new.

Clean stainless steel appliances. Use a microfiber cloth with a little vinegar to wipe away fingerprints and sticky spots.

Divide up big spaces. Cozy conversation areas within an open floor plan are gaining popularity. You can also hang curtains in doorways between rooms, invest in folding doors or get creative by breaking up the room with large pieces of furniture or free-standing art.

Check out my listing on 3236 NE 78th Portland OR on my website! With a little TLC it could be the house of your dreams! Use these tips to help your dreams come true!!

4 Tips to Cut Utility Costs

Utilities are some of the expenses you just can’t avoid. They’re necessary, but they don’t have to break the bank. Here are four ways to save on your energy and water bills.

1. Wash your clothes on cold. According to a leading washer and dryer manufacturer LG Electronics, 90 percent of energy used during a wash cycle comes from heating the water.

2. Unplug electronics you aren’t using. Most electronic devices constantly pull a small amount of electricity, which can add up. Unplug your desktop and laptop computers, coffeemaker, cordless phones, and other electronic gadgets when they aren’t in use.

3. Maintain your appliances. Vacuum condenser coils on your refrigerator quarterly. Remove debris from inside and around your air conditioning unit annually. Change your air filters every three months, or more often in a home with shedding pets.

4. Shut the faucet off. Limit how long you’re running water out of your faucets. Turning the water off while you brush your teeth can save up to 200 gallons of water a month, according to the EPA’s WaterSense program. Water your lawn and garden in the cool of the evening when the excess water is less susceptible to evaporation, using less water to keep your grass green and healthy.
